Wednesday Hodgepodge - 13 February 2013

1. This week marks the beginning of Lent...will you be giving something up or adding anything to your life during this season of the year?

Hopefully, my second grandchild will be added to my life this year.

2. The day before Lent is Shrove Tuesday...tradition states you eat pancakes on this day. In some parts of the world Shrove Tuesday is actually known as 'pancake day'. How do you like your pancakes? Or don't you?

I like blueberry pancakes smothered in maple syrup and a little butter.

3. I'm sure there are many, but what is one love song you really love?

"Angel Eyes" by the Jeff Healey Band

4. What are some things you do to let others know you love them?

I tell them, talk with them, be there for them, buy things for them, send them money, and spend time with them.

5. Roses...red, pink, or some other color? Can you recall the last time someone gave you flowers? Given your choice would you like to open the door and see a dozen red roses, a dozen purple tulips, or a dozen pink peonies?

I love blue roses...so beautiful!  My husband gave me a beautiful potted flower last year for valentines day.

Given the three choices of roses, tulips or peonies, I would take the peonies because they remind me of home.  Another flower that reminds me of home is lilacs (which is my most favorite flower).

6. President's Day will be celebrated next Monday. Does Presidential history and trivia interest you? Many Presidential homes are open to the public and offer guided tours...Monticello (Jefferson's home), Mount Vernon (Washington's home), Montpelier (James Madison's home), Hyde Park (FD Roosevelt's home) and The White House (home to the sitting President), to name just a few. Of those listed, which would you be most interested in touring? Why?

Presidential history and trivia does not interest (and politics gets on my nerves).   Monticello, Mount Vernon, Montpelier and Hyde Park would be interesting to tour, just to get a glimpse into how life was during those times.  I would like to tour the White House, just to say I did.

7. Are you good at keeping secrets?

Yes, I am good at keeping secrets.

8. Random Thought:  Tomorrow is Valentine's Day and I wish it was already here and gone.  I do not like Valentine's Day.  I think it is a bullshit holiday. Every store you go to puts Valentine related stuff in your face. Advertisements, cards, treats, gifts and more offer promises of everlasting love.

I think my dislike for Valentine’s Day began many, many years ago in Elementary School. Each year the teacher would force all students to bring in a decorated shoe box for our Valentine’s Day party. Students would be given a list of names of every student in their class and were expected to make a Valentine to give to each one on the list. I would work hours to pick out the perfect little valentine card for each person. I was always so excited to give them out as school…only to be disappointed at peoples comments about my cards. Kids can say some really mean and hateful things. While I don’t remember the exact words, I do remember how much they hurt and how totally alone I always felt.

  1. I don't think I've ever seen blue roses, but they do sound pretty!

  2. Great song choice. I love the Jeff Healy band. Too bad he left us at such an early age.

  3. The stores here moved on to Easter about two weeks ago which also feels odd. I wanted conversation hearts and there was nothing but peanut butter Easter eggs.

Lilacs are one of my favorites too...they have the most fabulous fragrance of any flower I think.
