Fortune Cookie Friday

Today at work we ordered Chinese food for lunch. 

Here is the fortune I received in my fortune cookie.

Bacon Jam

I found this recipe in a magazine while sitting at the doctor's office today.I can't wait to make it! 

(I will probably leave out the crushed red pepper flakes though.)

Ingredients:
1 pound bacon, cut crosswise into 1/2 inch pieces
1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 tsp mustard powder
1/2 cup bourbon
1/3 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
1/8 tsp crushed red pepper flakes

Directions:
In 2 batches, cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently until crisp. 6 minutes per batch. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate.

Discard all but 1 tablespoon fat and return the skillet to medium heat.  Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally until beginning to soften, 6 minutes; stir in the mustard powder.

Add the bourbon, vinegar and maple syrup and simmer, scraping up any brown bits, until the minute is reduced by about half, 3 to 4 minutes.  Stir in the sugar and red pepper.

Return the bacon to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally until the liquid reduces to a fairly thick glaze.  4 to 5 minutes.

What flavor cake do you like for your birthday? Chocolate.

Have you ever been in love with someone much older or younger than you? Yes, but looking back...it was not love it was lust.

Have you ever had a job you loved? I love my current job and I am good at what I do.

Have you ever been in a building that was on fire? While in grade school the furnace in my school blew up. I was going back to class after using the restroom and ran straight outside.

Are you in an argument with anyone right now? No.  There is one person that I don't particularly like that I am forced to be around. 

Would you change your hair color to something outrageous if you would get paid to? Probably not.  I have never dyed my hair and I don't really want to damage it.

Have you ever written a poem for someone? Yes.

What is a place you’ve vacationed at and would like to go back to? Florida!  Daytona Beach, Fort Walton, Destin, Jacksonville.

Do you eat samples at the grocery store? Sometimes.

What do you absolutely have to have to make your birthday feel special? Sleep.

What’s the last tourist area you visited? The Wisconsin Dells

Where do you go out to eat for a special occasion? No where special.

When was the last time you went to a post office? Yesterday

Is there an item you are saving up to buy right now? I am saving money to do more remodeling to my house. I have three more rooms that need to be painted and at least one of the three needs new flooring.

Are you psychic in any way? I get "gut feelings" when something bad is going to happen.

Do you prefer a laptop or desktop? Which are you on now? I prefer a desktop and that is what I am using right now.

Have you ever received a gift and truly did not know what it was? Not that I can remember.

Even Dogs Have Deep Thoughts

Shelby had to go to the vet today to get her nails trimmed. 

So I told her where we had to go.  She looked up for a brief minute,

then went into what appeared to be deep thought.

As you can see from the photo below, she decided it was

ok to go to the vet but ONLY because it was for a nail trim.

 

Sunday Stealing (A Day Late): I Want You to be Free From Me

This week's Sunday Stealing was stolen from Everything Goes To Hell.

Are your nails painted a dark or light color? Right now my nails are not painted because I am working on my house. Normally may nails are painted and I tend to lean towards a variety of blue color.

Have you ever order pizza online? Yes, much easier and faster.

What color was the last candle you lit? Light purpleish/pinkish (smells like lilacs).

Is there something written on your shirt right now? Yes, it says "Missouri.  The Show Me State"

Is there a bookshelf in your room?  No.

Do you own a treadmill? I did until a few weeks ago.  

Have you ever signed up for a gym membership? Yes and I never went.  Gyms make me nervous and I feel like everyone is staring at me.

Is there a garbage can in your room? What color is it?  I have several rooms in my house with a garbage can in them.  I have a wooden garbage bin in the kitchen, a white can in the computer room, a black can in the living room and an off white can in the bathroom.

Have you ever read in the bathtub? Yes, very relaxing.

Have you ever had to wear a hairnet? I had to wear one when I worked in an onion ring factory many, many years ago and I did not like it.

Do you know how many pages the last book you read had? 498...I looked.

What day of the week does the laundry usually get done? No specific day, laundry gets done when it needs to be done...sometimes daily.

Do you use the Facebook chat often? Daily to talk to my friend Rose.

Do you have any baby pictures of yourself on your computer? No.

Do you eat onion rings? Yes.

What flavor of tea did you last have? Regular iced tea...I don't really get into flavored teas.

Do you own a bathrobe? Yes.

Did you/will you have coffee or some other form of caffeine today? Yes.

Do you have a mailbox or do you collect your mail from the post office? Yes.

What was the last animal you saw, and was it a pet? My dog and yes she is my pet...more of a companion/child/family member.

What was the last documentary you watched focusing on? I do not remember what the last documentary I watched was.  I blame getting old!

Is there anything you need to remember to do before the day ends?  Yes.

Is your car messy, or do you like to keep it clean? Messy but I don't mind.

Are you the type to wake up before the sun has even risen? Only on workdays.

Do you get uncomfortable when people stare at you? Yes.

Have you ever been admitted to the hospital for a long period of time? Yes.

Chocolate French Toast

Ingredients: 
3 large eggs
3/4 cup 1% milk
3 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons HERSHEY'S Cocoa
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
10 slices whole wheat bread
2-1/2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
10 teaspoons soft margarine (contains no partially hydrogenated oil)



Directions: 
Beat eggs, milk, sugar, cocoa, vanilla, salt and cinnamon, if desired, in large bowl until smooth.

Heat griddle or skillet over medium-low heat. Grease griddle with margarine, if necessary.

Dip bread in egg mixture. Place on griddle. Cook about 2 to 4 minutes on each side. Serve immediately with 1 teaspoon soft margarine per slice.

Tiger Lilies and Driftwood

I love driftwood.  I found this sitting outside near my garage.

I am not sure who put it there but I am keeping it!

 Tiger lilies are impervious!

I moved these from the front of my house earlier this Spring

and threw the clumps behind the garage.  I thought the lilies 

were dead...looks like I was wrong.  It happens.
